Jet2 records significant summer season losses

Jet2 records significant summer season losses

For the six months to the end of September, Jet2 posted a loss after tax of £69 million, down from a profit of £279 million for the same time last year.

Over the half-year period, the leisure airline and tour operator saw sales fall by almost 90 percent, down from £ 2.5 billion to £ 300 million.

A total of one million single-sector passengers were flown by Jet2 during the time, down from 11 million last year.

The group achieved an average load factor of 69 per cent, down from 93 per cent last year, due to the "uncertainty created by the several changes in UK government quarantine guidance."

The company resumed operations on July 15th after grounding its aircraft fleet in mid-March, as the government lifted quarantine restrictions for an approved list of countries.

Although the group said the latest positive news was "welcome" about a possible vaccine, Jet2 added that it remained "cautious" about its next summer approach.

Present seat capacity will, however, be close to the rate of summer 2019.

"We have taken many steps over the period to improve our available liquidity and will continue to do so to ensure that we are best placed to react quickly as travel restrictions are altered and customer trust recovers," a statement clarified.

"In spite of these difficult choices, we will continue to take every step necessary to maintain cash and increase liquidity to ensure that both Jet2.com and Jet2holidays are equipped to deal with this most challenging trading environment and are also best positioned for all stakeholders to return to operations in a stable financial position."
