As rescue talks fail, Thomas Cook ends trading

As rescue talks fail, Thomas Cook ends trading

Following the collapse of recuse discussions aimed at saving the 178-year-old firm, Thomas Cook has ceased trading.

From today, all the organisations in the company, including Thomas Cook Airlines, will cease operations.

There will also be hundreds of retail stores closed.

A last-minute demand for up to £ 200 million in extra liquidity pushed the tour operator over the brink, despite agreement on a possible deal to save the company earlier this month.

Peter Fankhauser, Chief Executive Officer of Thomas Cook, commented: "In the past few days, we have worked exhaustively to resolve the outstanding problems in an agreement to secure the future of Thomas Cook for its employees, customers and suppliers."

"Although an agreement was largely agreed, an additional facility requested in the last few days of negotiations presented a challenge which ultimately proved to be insurmountable."

The British government and the Civil Aviation Authority are working together to fly as many as 150,000 overseas customers back to the UK after the collapse.

About 16,000 holidaymakers are booked on Monday to come back.

On chartered flights, officials expect to bring at least 14,000 of them home.

In order to carry customers home, the government has chartered 45 jets and they will operate 64 routes today.

The fleet's size would briefly make it the UK's fifth largest airline.

Some aircraft have been supplied by operators, including easyJet and Virgin, with jets arriving from as far away as Malaysia.

Fankhauser added: "To me and the rest of the board, it is a matter of deep regret that we have not been successful."

I would like to apologize to our millions of clients and to the thousands of staff, suppliers and partners who have been helping us for many years.

Despite tremendous confusion over recent weeks, our teams have continued to put clients first, illustrating why Thomas Cook is one of the most successful travel brands.

"For the company that pioneered package holidays and made travel possible for millions of people around the globe, this marks a deeply sad day."

The failure places 22,000 jobs worldwide at risk, including 9,000 in the UK.

Valor Hospitality takes up management of Fancourt

Valor Hospitality takes up management of Fancourt

Valor Hospitality Partners Africa has signed a management agreement with Fancourt in South Africa.

The asset management company will be taking over the reins from outgoing chief executive, Georgie Davidson.

Fancourt, a member of the Leading Hotels of the World, consists of the Fancourt hotel and the award-winning Manor House, which together offer 133 rooms and suites.

The resort offers an extensive recreational leisure facility including indoor and outdoor pools, a state-of-the-art leisure centre, tennis courts, outdoor activities as well as a fully equipped spa, hair salon and boutique.

In addition to its proud legacy of sporting excellence, Fancourt offers three internationally acclaimed golf courses that were designed by a dynamic team spearheaded by Gary Player and owner, Hasso Plattner.

Speaking on the announcement, Tony Romer-Lee, managing partner, Valor Hospitality Partners Africa and Middle East, said: “We cannot wait for the resort to fully reopen and to work with the team to rebuild the business.

“With the backing of the Plattner family to continue to invest in the experiences, we are confident that Fancourt will continue to be the leading destination in the Garden Route.”

Valor Hospitality recently expanded its USA portfolio world with an additional seven internationally branded IHG, Marriott and some independently owned properties.

More Information

Fancourt has become a global landmark for business, leisure and golfing travel but its gradual expansion can be traced back to the establishment of the Manor House by its first custodian, Henry Fancourt White, in the 1880s.

Expanding on the stature of the Manor House, the estate itself was transformed into a hotel and golfing destination in 1989 under the direction of Andrea and Helene Pieterse.

Now, under the ownership of Hasso and Sabine Plattner, the Fancourt estate boasts a contemporary outlook on its early beginnings, with award-winning golf courses and unparalleled service offerings, against the backdrop of the ever-present Outeniqua mountain range.

The property is considered South Africa’s Leading Resort by voters at the World Travel Awards.

Third quarter losses of EUR 1.05 billion were announced by Air France-KLM

Third quarter losses of EUR 1.05 billion were announced by Air France-KLM

For the third quarter of the financial year, Air France-KLM announced an operating loss of EUR 1,05 billion from the effect of Covid-19 on the European aviation market and reels.

Revenue decreased by 67% to EUR 2,52 billion, while the company reported a net loss of EUR 1,67 billion, including a restructuring fee of EUR 565 million and an impairment fee of EUR 31 million for the fleet.

Air France-KLM added that the latest lockdown introduced by the French government would weigh on results through the fourth quarter of this year in the wake of increasing coronavirus cases across Europe.

Benjamin Smith, Group Chief Executive, said: "After a promising recovery in the summer, the gradual closure of international borders in the second half of August and the resurgence of the pandemic in the third quarter had a significant impact on our results."

"We have accelerated the introduction of steps to minimize costs and conserve cash.

"We are also working closely with our partners on various means, such as rapid detection tests, that would allow our customers and employees to traffic under the best sanitary conditions."

During the fourth quarter, Air France is expected to fly 35 per cent of the capacity it provided in 2019, with KLM offering about 45 per cent.

Smith added: "We are engaged in a more profound transformation of our group beyond these immediate necessary measures, with the aim of exiting this crisis in a stronger position, ready to tackle the future challenges of our industry."

Air transport will continue to connect individuals and cultures, but we anticipate shifts in the preferences of customers that we also expect.

"We expect the fourth quarter of 2020 to be challenging, with current forward bookings down sharply from last year."

Loganair will relaunch Jersey ties next summer

Loganair will relaunch Jersey ties next summer

Loganair, a Glasgow-based airline, announced that it will re-introduce a twice-weekly flight from Teesside International Airport in northeast England to Jersey starting in the summer of 2021.

Following a new agreement between Loganair and Teesside International Airport, the reintroduction of the Jersey route joins a network of four additional routes confirmed last week by the airline, after pausing operations back in 2018.

Amanda Burns, Visit Jersey Chief Executive, said: "We are delighted to welcome visitors from the north-east of England on this resumed Teesside route, which significantly improves our island's connectivity."

We know that travel is a struggle at the moment, but the perfect opportunity for UK travelers to enjoy an idyllic domestic holiday comes with the return of this short-haul route.

"This is an excellent indicator that our island continues to be a desirable destination for travel and we look forward to welcoming back visitors in 2021, both old and new."

The relaunched route arrives just in time for the summer season, although travel is likely to remain unpredictable in 2021.

There has never been a better time to visit Jersey, perfect for a weekend escapade or for something a little longer.

Jersey is a leading tourist destination, as an island small in size but strong in personality, with some of the best weather in the UK, golden-sand beaches and a range of outdoor activities.

"A spokesman for Loganair commented: "We are pleased to announce flights from Teesside International to Jersey next summer.

With travel to the continent remaining unpredictable, we are optimistic that as they seek sunshine closer to home, the Channel Islands will prove a common destination with our customers.

"We'll also continue our popular route from Norwich next year, and our recent Blue Islands codeshare partnership will provide enhanced connectivity from across the UK."

Preparations for the Upcoming Hospitality Summit in Saudi Arabia

Preparations for the Upcoming Hospitality Summit in Saudi Arabia

The travel community is planning for the Upcoming Hospitality Summit, a virtual hybrid conference created to discuss big ideas and resolve the hospitality industry's challenges.

Tomorrow, live from Riyadh and around the world, the event starts.

The gathering, organized by the Ministry of Tourism of Saudi Arabia and the G20 Saudi Secretariat, will be powered by Bench Digital as part of the International Conference Program honoring the Saudi G20 presidency in 2020.

The event, which promises to be one of the hospitality community's most impactful gatherings, will be delivered on the tried-and-tested, cutting-edge, digital event platform of Bench Digital, providing an immersive live experience for all participants, including a virtual exhibition, one-to-one video networking, and integrated chat features.

In partnership with business creators, innovators and advisors, a robust three-pillar programme has been established with a specific emphasis on identifying the current environment, partnering and analyzing opportunities, and innovating to recreate the future.

Marriott International Chief Executive Arne Sorenson; Carnival Corporation Chief Executive Arnold Donald; World Travel & Tourism Council Chief Executive Gloria Guevara; and Anita Mendiratta, a special assistant to the UNWTO Secretary-General, are all featured speakers.

About 100 other respected speakers and thousands of guests will be joining them.

As a country that is at the forefront of the response and recovery plans of the tourism sector through the presidency of the G20, Saudi Arabia is leading the conversation on the future of tourism and will provide an international platform at the Future Hospitality Summit to bring the industry together.

Mahmoud Abdulhadi, Deputy Minister for Investment at the Saudi Ministry of Tourism, said: 'Together we will map the restoration of the tourism and travel sector and strategically plan a sustainable future for stakeholders at all levels.'

In order to facilitate a stronger response for a stronger future, the Future Hospitality Summit aims to gather the global industry for important discussions and create critical links to build relationships, unity and actionable ways to support each other.

Jonathan Worsley, Chairman of Bench Digital, added: "It is vital that hospitality professionals across the globe come together as a community to work towards our industry's recovery during this difficult time."

"Not only will the Future Hospitality Summit provide a powerful platform for virtual networking, showcasing best practice and demonstrating thought leadership, but it will also prove invaluable in ensuring that these unprecedented challenges make the industry stronger as a whole."

Two of the key focus points of the hybrid summit will be empowering tomorrow's employees and attracting talent into the hospitality industry-imperative factors in sustaining the industry.

In order to rapidly evolve and keep pace with the demand generated from the hospitality sector, developing a skilled workforce is paramount. In Saudi Arabia, for instance, by 2030, 253 new hotels will be online.

As a consequence, the Future Hospitality Summit is a forum for engaging with future hospitality workers and promoting the industry as an attractive career path.

Sailing is suspended until late December by MSC Magnifica

Sailing is suspended until late December by MSC Magnifica

MSC Cruises will temporarily suspend further MSC Magnifica sailings.

From 8 November to 18 December, including the temporary suspension, sailing will be affected.

The cruise line, which in October saw the vessel return to the water, blamed the decision on the prevailing pandemic situation in France and Germany and the subsequent travel restrictions.

The two primary source markets for the ship's ten-night voyages through the eastern and western Mediterranean are France and Germany.

MSC Grandiosa, meanwhile will continue and expand its current sailings into next year.

The flagship will carry out its current seven-night itinerary in the western Mediterranean via Genoa, Civitavecchia, Naples and Palermo, Italy, as well as Valetta, Malta, until 27 March.

She will continue to sail from December 18th with her special one off eight-night Christmas cruise itinerary that week when MSC Magnifica resumes service after her temporary break, then return to her current ten-night itinerary through the Eastern and Western Mediterranean until the end of April.

MSC Cruises has been forced to cancel its 2021 World Cruise, which was scheduled to be carried out by MSC Magnifica, in connection with the health situation on shore and in particular, the ongoing unavailability of most ports along the planned itinerary. With rescheduling options, guests will be notified separately.

In the aftermath of the Covid-19 suspension, Seabourn works to build business events

In the aftermath of the Covid-19 suspension, Seabourn works to build business events

As hospitality companies strive to recalibrate their businesses for the post-Covid-19 era, event organizers have been offered a wealth of new opportunities in recent weeks.

Recently, a host of private islands have joined the market in the Maldives, offering a rare opportunity to impress guests.

Now as its conventional markets diminish in the aftermath of the pandemic, cruise operator Seabourn is making a bid for the MICE business.

For prospective charter, reward, conference and community travel customers, the line makes it easier to understand why a ship could be the ideal option for their next meeting.

A considerable amount of information has recently been added by the brand to its website dedicated to this niche segment of the travel industry.

The pages begin with a detailed description of why one of the ships could be a competitive alternative compared to a conventional land-based hotel or resort.

"There are likely to be a fair number of brokers and travel advisors who do not even know that they can consider a ship for a corporate meeting, an incentive trip for top performers, or even for private customers who may want the ultimate in memorable vacations all the way up to chartering the ship for their private use," said Pierre Van Breda, deputy director of global charter, incentive and group sales.

"In order to help them in their decision-making process, prospective customers can now gather a lot of useful information on our site before coming to us for a tailor-made quotation specifically tailored to their needs."

The revised web content often explains the facilities provided in a Seabourn experience, such as the provision of dedicated meeting room and the use of audio-visual equipment included in the quote from the client.

In combination with the ship's addition of food and beverage, potential buyers can soon see how the value increases as the amount of time to arrange these items separately reduces compared to other locations.

In order to make the information collection process easier, site visitors can also find links to unique ships, data about public and private spaces, and a photo gallery.

Until at least November, all Seabourn sailings are currently suspended.

Ritz-Carlton, Xi'an, opens at the Terracotta Warriors House

The Ritz-Carlton, Xi'an opened its doors in one of the most historic cities in China.

Owned by Zhongda Zhongfangxin Proprietary Business, the hotel elevates luxury by linking guests through a modern take on local culture, history and cuisine to the rich way of life of the destination.

Xi'an is the ancient provincial capital of Shaanxi, situated in the central-north-western region of China, regarded as the 'cradle of Chinese civilization.'

With a history spanning thousands of years, Xi'an is one of the four ancient capitals of China and the former residence of 13 Chinese imperial dynasties.

The town marks the eastern end of the ancient Silk Road and is a main crossroad to one of the most important trade corridors in the country today.

It is the birthplace of the 2,000-year-old Terracotta Warriors of that nation.

"Lisa Holladay, global brand leader for the Ritz-Carlton, said We are pleased to bring the legendary service of the Ritz-Carlton to Xi'an, a city that combines the majesty of the past with the pulse of the present and the hope of the future.

"The Ritz-Carlton, Xi'an will offer guests and visitors from around the globe a truly authentic experience by creating a unique sense of place while also celebrating the vibrant cultural legacy of the destination."

The Ritz-Carlton, Xi'an is ideally situated in the Gao Xin District business center and provides exclusive access to a number of historical and cultural sites, including the Terracotta Warriors, the Great Wild Goose Pagoda and the Old City Walls.

The hotel, designed by Remedios Studio, is imbued with a spirit of timeless luxury, exposing the city's distinctive soul.

Interiors pay tribute to Xi'an's architecture, history and culture through patterned motifs crafted by local artisans that provide a thoughtful route to discovering the destination's secret pieces.

To further unveil the ancient capital, guests will be treated to traditional pipa music and locally inspired beverages and snacks during the transition from day to night.

31 contemporary suites, planned as refined and calming sanctuaries, compose the 283 elegantly decorated guestrooms of the hotel.

Seabourn postpones return until 2021

Seabourn postpones return until 2021

Seabourn has called for the 2020 cruise season to cease, stating that its three ships will not return until the beginning of next year.

Seabourn Odyssey, Seabourn Ovation and Seabourn Encore are all covered by the announcement.

Specifically, Seabourn Odyssey would see its activities cancelled as early as 15 January.

Until April 18th and May 28th next year, Seabourn Ovation and Seabourn Encore will be out of service.

The decision to cancel additional voyages is a constructive move to resolve the circumstances that continue to emerge from the global reaction to the situation of Covid-19, the company said.

Seabourn had earlier hoped to give guests this year at least a small number of departures.

"Compliance, environmental protection and the health, safety and well-being of our guests, crew and people in the destinations we visit are our highest priorities," said Josh Leibowitz, Seabourn President.

"We know that when the time is right and that time is on the horizon, our past guests and travelers are eager to travel, so I would encourage anyone to look at their calendar and start planning a trip today to let the excitement build."

Guests with affected cruises are immediately cancelled and future cruise points are awarded to all guests.

A full refund of the money charged to Seabourn can also be demanded.

Saudi Arabia reiterates its call for international investment in the hotel industry

Saudi Arabia reiterates its call for international investment in the hotel industry

Delegates at the Future Hospitality Summit have been told that Saudi Arabia offers a rare opportunity for investors.

Khalid Al-Falih, the country's Minister of Investment, told attendees from around the world that the Saudi tourism sector is poised to expand sustainably, and invited them to participate.

From the Red Sea dive sites, the orange sand dunes of the Arabian Desert and some of the richest habitats anywhere on earth, there are few destinations that have the variety of offerings that Saudi Arabia has.

"Of course, we also have an extensive heritage dating back over thousands of years, some of which the outside world has largely undiscovered."

Al-Falih reiterated that by 2030, Saudi hoped to welcome 100 million visitors annually, bringing it to the top tier of global hospitality destinations.

For investors, this would give a great opportunity, he said.

We are looking at ways to make the tourism sector more involved.

In the post-Covid-19 world, what will make Saudi Arabia special is that as we expand, we will be undersupplied with hospitality properties.

A lot of hotels, airports and logistics markets are over-supplied, but that's not the case here.

"We will add 500,000 hotel rooms here in Saudi Arabia by 2030, whatever the situation in the rest of the world.

"Projects and opportunities will take place here, all of which will be offered to the private sector."

Al-Falih spoke at the Future Hospitality Summit, a hybrid virtual conference designed for the next two days in Riyadh to discuss big ideas and tackle the problems facing the hospitality industry.

The festival, which promises to be one of the hospitality community's most impactful events, will be presented by Bench Digital on a cutting-edge event platform.

It will provide all participants with an interactive live experience, including a virtual display, one-to-one video networking and integrated chat features.

Saudi Arabia reiterates its call for international investment in the hotel industry

Al-Falih continued: 'Foreign investors here in Saudi Arabia are not too familiar with the landscape.

They know the oil industry, sure, but it's fair to say that tourism is less so, and what we're trying to do with it is to lay out the business case.

We have to look at the regulatory climate and try to mitigate the risks by adjusting legislation and ensuring stability." They are aware of the risks and we have to respect that."

We will look at the implementation of special economic zones with new tax systems, legal mechanisms and international arbitration, none of which have been finalized, however we are working on them.

"These will be offered, if we find it necessary, to different sectors, including tourism."

Foreign direct investment in Saudi Arabia has dropped to record lows in recent years, according to the World Bank, illustrating the scale of the challenge at hand, particularly given the global recession likely to follow the Covid-19 shutdown.

The government will set out the infrastructure, the legal framework and the vision, and we hope the private sector will invest," Al-Falih concluded."

Over the last few years, this has been happening, and we hope tourism will be able to take advantage of that.

"We hope investors will bring guests, make money, and with them we will celebrate it."

Madeira is honored by the top title of the World Travel Awards

Madeira is honored by the top title of the World Travel Awards

At the World Travel Awards, Discover Madeira won the title of Europe's Leading Island Destination.

The archipelago has won the accolade for the seventh time.

Writer H.N. referred to Madeira as the most enviable island on earth. In the 19th century, Coleridge -' with almost every tropical luxury, it guarantees every European comfort' - and as the award indicates, this view continues to the present day.

Thanks to its outstanding handling of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the destination was in the press, making it one of the most desirable and secure holiday choices.

Security, however, is only one of the many strings on the bow of Madeira.

It has the winning combination of stunning natural beauty, friendly people, fantastic food and wine, value for money, excellent accommodation and outdoor activities, enjoyable cultural festivals, warmth throughout the year and is within easy reach of the UK (3.5-hour flight).

This Portuguese outpost, at the same latitude as Casablanca, is home to some of Europe's most striking and lush landscapes.

The landscape on the continent is rugged, complex, more tropical than anywhere else and the warm sea is still close by.

The rich volcanic soil, mountainous landscape and vast Laurissilva forest - a UNESCO World Heritage Site that covers 20% of the main island - mean that guests will feel extremely happy there if nature is your thing.

Interview with Breaking Travel News: Robert Zgozi, Chief Executive, Safaris of Absolute Zambia

Interview with Breaking Travel News: Robert Zgozi, Chief Executive, Safaris of Absolute Zambia

Absolute Zambia Safaris has been honoured as one of the best travel, tourism and hospitality providers in the region by voters at World Travel Awards, with Breaking Travel News here chatting with owner, Robert Zgozi, to find out more about the company

Breaking Travel News: Congratulations on your victory at the World Travel Awards, with Absolute Zambia Safaris being recognised as Zambia’s Leading Travel Agency. How does it feel to have won?

Robert Zgozi: Thank you very much - it is an honour for us to have won this prestigious prize.

This is an amazing experience, and we feel great after working hard and offering the best service to our clients in 2019.

Then 2020 started on a bad note for Absolute Zambia Safari.

Our clients, who were looking forward to their travel and tours, have been hit hard due to the outbreak of the global pandemic.

Winning this award gives us the energy to keep doing what we like doing best and now, even better.

The team at Absolute Zambia Safaris have dedicated the award to our clients and everyone that has been affected by the global pandemic.

We understand that a safari holiday is a dream for everyone, especially travelling to Africa, but now a lot of things changed very quickly - we very eager to travel but right now it might not be possible.

BTN: How useful are the World Travel Awards when it comes to promoting the business to a global hospitality audience?

RZ: The award is useful in promoting our brand and our products, as well as the services that we offer, to our clients; it shows that we are doing a great job in our service delivery and looking after our clients.

World Travel Awards is recognised globally, hence for Absolute Zambia Safari to have been recognised gives us more credibility and gives assurance to potential travellers that we are among the leading service providers in this in industry.

As many travel agents, tour operators and other players in the industry will now know us, this will also assist us with business-to-business marketing.

The World Travel Awards will help us welcome them when they have customers who want to travel on a safari to Zambia, or Africa in general.

Interview with Breaking Travel News: Robert Zgozi, Chief Executive, Safaris of Absolute Zambia

BTN: How would you characterize the atmosphere in Southern Africa's tourism sector right now? Next year is there hope for a revival?

RZ: Well, travel is very important, and when presented with circumstances like this the travel and tourism industry is very resilient.

But in order to at least help protect biodiversity and employment, we need to work together to ensure that people can fly.

Having said that, individuals are willing to fly, despite some of the limitations placed in place to protect everybody.

At this time, there is a small number of travellers who are able to fly.

We also seen a spike in inquiries by international and regional travelers by the end of 2020 and the beginning of 2021 in the last month or so.

That gives us a lot of hope and comes next year for rapid recovery, as long as the virus is kept under control.

This needs all of us to get involved and do our part by following the recommendations placed in place locally and internationally by experts and health authorities.

Interview with Breaking Travel News: Robert Zgozi, Chief Executive, Safaris of Absolute Zambia

BTN: Do you anticipate a rise in demand for safari travel in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, given its socially-distant, outdoor nature?

RZ: Yes I am sure of that.

It has been seen from the research and surveys we have conducted that safari travel fits well with the guidelines for Covid-19.

The majority of lodges and safari camps are tiny and in the bush, so there are less people around.

As a family, or as a couple, there is also versatility for private meals.

The practices are also outside, and it has been established that fresh air is continuously circulating while you are outside, reducing the risk of contracting the virus.

Mondrian Gold Coast to take brand into Australia

Mondrian Gold Coast to take brand into Australia

Accor and sbe have confirmed the first Mondrian hotel and branded residences in Australia will be built at Burleigh Heads Beachfront on the Gold Coast.

A dual tower property, Mondrian Gold Coast is being developed in collaboration with Chris and Letitia Vitale’s Vitale Projects.

It will be constructed on an expansive 43,453 square foot (4,037 sqm) beachfront site on the corner of First Avenue and the Esplanade Burleigh Heads in one of the Gold Coast’s most desirable neighbourhoods.

With 262 feet (80 meters) of ocean frontage, guests and residents will have direct access to the signature white sands and world-famous surfs of Burleigh Heads Beach.

Mondrian Gold Coast will feature two distinct towers to separate the private residences, comprised of 89 luxury residential apartments, from the hotel, which will encompass 208 guestrooms.

The buildings will be united by a three-level podium that acts as the building’s common space and hub of activity, including a state-of-the-art fitness centre, spa, restaurants, and swimming pools, all overlooking the world-famous beach and Burleigh Headland National Park.

Chadi Farhat, chief operating officer, sbe said: “We are very excited to announce the opening of our first Mondrian hotel and residences in Australia with our partner Accor.

“With five open properties, nine in development, and six more to be announced, Mondrian has established itself as one of the strongest brands in the sbe lifestyle portfolio, showing staying power for the long-term.

“The Gold Coast has grown into one of Australia’s leading travel destinations and the opening of Mondrian Gold Coast is the next step in our strategic global expansion for the Mondrian brand, selecting communities at the heart of the most exciting cultural destinations in the world.”

This coastal Queensland location will be sbe’s first hotel property in Australia after the celebrated recent openings of Hyde Paradiso lounge in Surfers Paradise and Hyde Perth, further expanding the brand’s luxury lifestyle experiences in the Asia Pacific.

Mondrian Gold Coast is one of nine new Mondrian properties that sbe plans to open globally by 2022, with six more to be announced.

It follows the company’s recent opening of Mondrian Seoul Itaewon, and the announcement of Mondrian Shoreditch London set to open in 2021.

Accor Pacific chief executive, Simon McGrath, said: “The expansion of the first-ever Mondrian into Australia with its location at Burleigh Heads reflects Accor’s commitment to developing innovative, lifestyle-oriented hotels alongside our partner, sbe.

“With the Mondrian brand, sbe creates destinations within the destination, bringing together regional authenticity with sophisticated design, creative programming and a lively bar and restaurant scene.

“Mondrian Gold Coast will be the embodiment of this philosophy: providing residents and guests with elevated hospitality experiences that match the beauty and vibrancy of Australia’s Gold Coast region.”

Investigated by Breaking Travel News: Hamburg, Germany

It is possible to see the whirring cranes of the famous port in the distance, perched on the edge of the Hamburg docks, feet dangling over the river Elbe below.

Almost entirely automated, the facilities are considered to be some of the industry's most innovative.

The site has been the lifeblood of the city for decades, serving as a gateway to the world.

Even after considerable investment, however the port is still falling behind those of Rotterdam and Antwerp, with more than 100 kilometers of land restricting access to the very largest ships.

In response, over the past few years, the city has been trying to reposition itself, expanding its tourism industry.

The building is part of a larger initiative by local authorities to diversify away from maritime trade, while the new Elbphilharmonie concert hall has been hitting the headlines.

These efforts have been fruitful to a large degree, with the number of overnight stays rising by 87 per cent in the decade to 2017.

About 6.8 million tourists spent 13.8 million nights at 396 commercial accommodation companies in Hamburg last year with an average stay of two days.

Over the past decade, global demand has increased by 124 per cent, with almost a quarter of arriving guests now traveling internationally.

With Hamburg claiming to trail only London and New York in terms of the variety on offer, tourists have long come to the theater.

While that may be a little over ambitious, it is impossible to ignore the hundreds of productions on offer on large and small stages walking the streets of the city.

More recently, however it was the culinary scene that attracted attention, with something of a reputation as a foodie paradise being established by the city.

The North German city has been working hard to recalibrate the experiences of cooking in the country in the way it took Britain years to shed its reputation for terrible cuisine.

Throughout the region, there are hundreds of restaurants, offering everything from traditional lobscouse, eel soup and kümmel schnaps to more modern European and foreign dishes.

The concert hall of the Elbphilharmonie rejuvenated tourism in Hamburg

Hamburg is strung along the river, like many towns, with richness concentrated in the west and the more artistic groups expanding eastward.

As a consequence, in the poorest parts of town, some of the most exciting restaurants can be found.

A good example is Dulf's Burger, which serves buns piled five high with burgers to a mix of locals and visitors.

The restaurant is not afraid to serve its meat pink and bloody, while the drinks definitely add to the friendly atmosphere, packed early on a weekday afternoon - always a positive sign.

Being a port area, fish is a big part of the local diet, obviously.

In a casual space, Underdocks is just around the corner, serving blackfish rolls, ceviche and black tiger tacos.

Patrons enjoy a short lunch or a long afternoon catch-up with friends under the watchful eyes of a surprisingly hip-looking sea captain painted on the wall.

A much more discerning palate caters to the surrounding Karo Fisch.

Hamburg has always taken pride in its radicalism and to this day, remains a hotbed of political activism.

At the same time, however it is considered to be one of Germany's richest cities, home to big offices for Airbus, Lufthansa and mail-order giant Otto.

At Karo Fisch, where well-heeled businessmen can be seen elbow-to-elbow with young activists, these two worlds clash.

The latter also includes the Feldstrasse Bunker, a massive WWII flak tower that, depending on who you ask, is either in the process of being converted into a five-star hotel or community garden.

A staple of the Hamburg diet, fish is

The Street Food Session is held every Thursday at Spielbudenplatz.

Hungry travelers can walk through 20 or so food trucks that rotate on a weekly basis, or sit in one of the area's more permanent cocktail bars.

I saw everything from Belgian waffles, paella from Spain and Mexican burritos to the offering of German fish soup, while the Clouds Heaven's Bar & Kitchen, perched on top of the nearby skyscraper, once you've had your fill, offers a great escape.

Now of course, street food trucks like this can be seen almost everywhere but the surrounding St Pauli area is what makes Hamburg worth a visit.

Hamburg has a long and salacious history as a port, and this tradition lasts.

Visitors will find the true soul of the city here, concentrating on the Reeperbahn, basically a mile-long stretch of dive bars, brothels, clubs and cheap restaurants, and a visit is important for anyone passing through.

Beatles-Platz is at one end, a decorated square paying homage to the period the famous band spent in Hamburg honing their art.

A little dicey at night, the region is either a gritty realization of all that makes the city amazing, or, depending on temperament, completely frightening.

Investigated by Breaking Travel News: Hamburg, Germany
Fine dining on the Reeperbahn at Spielbudenplatz

As a wealthy city of course, Hamburg also has many luxurious fine dining establishments, including the Oberhafen-Kantine.

The eatery is a taste of typical Hamburg, located in a tiny cottage that looms towards you like the Tower of Pisa.

Local chef Anita Haendel has been welcoming guests here with her home cooking for decades.

Before Tim Seidel and Sebastian Libbert agreed to take over and revive the original recipes, several new incarnations were tried for the building after her death.

Today, that implies that everything is homemade and freshly cooked, with hand pressed meatballs and freshly chopped cabbages, while the drinks are abundant, a real kooky place away from the beaten track.

With rising sea levels, Hamburg is actually in the midst of upgrading its defenses.

Throughout the town centre, new walls are being constructed, providing new walks for visitors to enjoy at the same time.

Tasquinha Galego, located in a historic tower, is at the core of the development.

It's something of an outlier for the region, serving traditional Portuguese cuisine, but well worth checking out.

The popular fish market is the highlight of every Hamburg journey.

Now without a visit to the popular fish market, any visit to Hamburg would not be complete.

The century old building is a perfect place to spend Sunday morning, depending on whether you've been up all night or are making an early start.

Revellers, eagle-eyed shoppers, vendors and everyone in between (during my tour, I saw at least one bride in her wedding gown) come together in what is basically a massive after-party for the entire city.

There are a few visitors taking photos, but it's mostly those still out celebrating-the queues are similar in length for coffee and beer.

With rock and jazz music, live bands keep spirits up, while those seeking sustenance can pick up hearty fish sandwiches for the ride home after a night of excess.

Keep an eye out too for Franzbrötchen, a thin, sweet, cinnamon-baked pastry.

It is a German take on the classic French dish, supposedly created when French troops under Napoleon captured Hamburg in the early seventeenth century and demanded croissants.

It has become a symbol of the region, whatever the true story of its origins.

The Fish Market is the best place to end every trip to Hamburg, with spectacular views around the harbour.

EY reports a dramatic rise in profit alerts from travel companies

EY reports a dramatic rise in profit alerts from travel companies

According to the latest quarterly review of UK profit warnings from EY, the travel and leisure sector has received more profit warnings than every other FTSE sector in 2020.

In the nine months to the end of September, leisure companies released a record-breaking 63 profit alerts - almost triple the amount EY posted during the whole of 2019, a total of 23.

In that time, some three quarters of the industry issued a warning, with 95 percent of those citing the impact of Covid-19.

The EY study found that the restaurant and bar sub-sector profit alerts (25) were more than four times higher in 2020 than in 2019 as a whole (25) (6).

Meg Wilson, transformation and restructuring strategy partner at EY UK, commented: "Covid-19, both operationally and financially, has hit the travel and leisure sector extremely hard."

The industry has done a fantastic job of putting people first including protecting clients and workers, but even the best corporations face difficult choices.

The industry continues to be seriously hammered by ongoing local and national constraints and volatile demand.

"We have already seen a number of permanent closures, insolvencies and distressed sales among companies facing pre-existing problems, such as overcapacity.

"The larger the pandemic's grip, the deeper the economic downturn and the longer the road to recovery."

In the period to the end of September, the FTSE leisure sector provided the most alerts, followed by retailers (49), industrial support services (49) and the media (49) (35).

Wilson added:' Cash management remains a priority for companies to thrive, and government help will continue to be required for some time.

In order to meet rapidly evolving market trends, businesses would need to transform their business models quickly in order to be more agile.

The recovery will require some big sector-wide restructuring, including resetting the cost of capacity and land, as well as tackling excessive borrowing.

Before Covid-19, the restaurant industry was already struggling with overcapacity problems and we now expect to see a further decline of around 20-25% of branded restaurants.

Reduced demand for business travel would also entail repositioning and future redevelopment for alternative use of several hotel sites.

"Those who have the flexibility to cope with this ongoing storm, and are able to reshape it will find significant growth and consolidation opportunities."

The decision implies the suspension between December 1st and December 31st of all Carnival cruise voyages.

Compliance, environmental security, and the health, safety and well-being of our visitors, the individuals in communities we affect, our crew and shore employees are always our highest responsibility and top priorities," said Arnold Donald, chief executive of Carnival Corporation."

"We continue to work on a detailed roadmap for the potential restart of cruising in North America with the United States Centres for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) and global government and public health agencies, as well as top medical and scientific experts around the world.

"We have established and intend to update our improved health and safety protocols with their mutual recommendations, which are in the best interest of our guests, crew and general public health.

"We definitely look forward to welcoming our guests on board whenever we restart our cruise operations in the United States." Each brand has communicated individually and will continue to engage with guests to provide feedback and advice on impacted cruise vacations.

Each respective brand will communicate the date for the restart of cruise operations and be accessible on their websites.

World Travel Market Virtual arrives in London for first time

World Travel Market Virtual arrives in London for first time

Travel and tourism professionals from around the world will reconnect for the first day of World Travel Market Virtual today, as the event debuts from London.

The three-day virtual event for the international tourism community will run until Wednesday.

The show also includes the Travel Forward Virtual and International Tourism & Investment Conference (ITIC).

The conference sessions will also host top politicians, leading academics, health experts and the world’s media, as the travel industry plans for recovery in 2021.

Highlights of this week’s agenda include a global tourism forecast from Euromonitor International, a conversation between the tourism ministers of Israel, United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, as well as the UNWTO minister summit.

WTM senior director, Simon Press, said: “The travel and tourism industry is facing its worst crisis in living memory, so World Travel Market Virtual will provide a crucial platform for planning the bounce-back, reconnecting with business partners, forging new connections, and learning about the best way forward.”

The Euromonitor International report will explain why global tourism will take between three and five years to recover from Covid-19.

Called ‘Accelerating Travel Innovations after Coronavirus,’ the study will also reveal how the travel industry is innovating in order to survive the devastating impact of the pandemic.

The turbulence in aviation will be discussed on all three days of WTM Virtual, starting with a debate about trends and forecasts.

A session today called ‘The Long-run Evolution of Aviation Activity following the coronavirus pandemic,’ will feature expertise from Virgin Atlantic, Boeing, IATA and Tourism Economics.

The summit will also hear from Oliver Dowden, the British secretary of state for digital, culture, media and sport.

It will be followed by ‘Tourism: The Path to Peace in the Middle East’, with the tourism ministers of Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

In September, these countries signed the Abraham Accords, a historic deal that enables business opportunities and tourism prospects.

The ministers will be discussing the new travel and tourism opportunities and the sector’s role in supporting peace in the region.

It will be the first time the tourism ministers have met since signing the agreements.

Press concluded: “Since 1980, World Travel Market has provided an essential forum for the industry to do business, network and learn about trends in the market.

“This is the year where global connections need to be maintained, build those networks and understand what’s happening in these extraordinary and challenging times.

“Our delegates will be able to keep ahead of the game and lay strong foundations for recovery and innovation in 2021.”

Uber launches new Vouchers payment option

Uber launches new Vouchers payment option

Uber is launching a way for businesses to pay the fare on a partner’s next Uber trip.

The new feature, Vouchers, makes it easy for businesses to cover trips to attract new clients or support loyalty and service for existing customers.

Businesses with an Uber account can easily create Vouchers and send them to customers via email, social media and mobile messaging.

Customers can then open the link and automatically add the Voucher to their Uber app, until it expires.

Vouchers can be applied for specific days of the week, times, pick-up and drop-off locations.

Perfect for businesses that are looking to offer trips to an event or as part of a promotion or loyalty programme.

Ronnie Gurion, global head of Uber for Business said: “With the international launch of this feature, Uber’s goal is to unlock an additional growth lever for businesses by creating an innovative way to bring customers to their door or wherever they need to go.

“As companies look for new technology and novel ways to engage with consumers, Vouchers provide a perk that businesses know their customers will use.”

The launch of Vouchers in the UK follows a pilot in the US with more than 100 partners, including TGI Friday’s, Live Nation, the Golden State Warriors, MGM Resorts, Sprint, Freshworks and Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield.

CDC issues framework for cruise return in United States

CDC issues framework for cruise return in United States

The Centres for Disease Control & Prevention has allowed a ‘no sail’ order for cruise ships operating in United States waters to expire.

In its place, the government body has issued a conditional framework of new regulations that cruise lines must follow as they seek to return to operation.

The order is seen as a first cautious step toward the resumption of cruising.

The sector has been all but suspended since the Covid-19 pandemic reached North America in March.

The first phase of this effort to relaunch focus not on passengers but crew members, who would be allowed to disembark from ships in the territorial waters of the United States.

It applies to ships that carry over 250 passengers.

The phased return begins while cruise ship operators build lab capacity to test crew members and future passengers.

Companies must show they adhere to testing, social distancing, quarantining and isolating requirements when necessary.

Later phases involve what are known as “mock voyages,” with volunteers playing the role of passengers to test virus mitigation strategies on trips.

Once ships have met certain requirements, they will be certified to begin operations with real passengers.

“This framework provides a pathway to resume safe and responsible sailing.

“It will mitigate the risk of Covid-19 outbreaks on ships and prevent passengers and crew from seeding outbreaks at ports and in the communities where they live,” said CDC director, Robert Redfield.
